Bookbinder,
I make and repair books. It is a wonderful feeling to bring an old much loved book back to life, so it can continue to be enjoyed. I also make small boxes and blank notebooks, which can be customized to individual requirements.

Alastair Robertson

Author / local historian

I've lived in Alston for twenty years and I'm still fascinated by this unique place. I'm keenly interested in all aspects of the history of Alston Moor. I've written several books, booklets and many articles on the subject, and I'm happy to give give talks about it. The enlarged 2nd, edition of 'A History of Alston Moor' is available now. There'll also be four of my other books on sale; 'The Walton Family', a lead-mining dynasty of the northern Pennines, 'Outward Bound', the diary of a Garrigill family on board an emigrant ship bound for Australia in 1912, 'January 28th 1908', the Roachburn Pit disaster, and 'Whitley Castle', a Roman fort near Alston, which has been the subject of a study by English Heritage archaeologists.

Jewellery

I have been making Jewellery for a year now, and I use all kinds of beads and glass. I like to create a quirky range aimed at younger people. My jewellery is reasonably priced, as I believe that in times of economic hardship, someone doesn't need to go out and buy a whole new outfit, but instead can update, smarten or make casual an outfit with a few pieces of jewellery. I enjoy making colourful, jewellery that stands out,is fashionable, unique and won't be seen on anyone else. I currently display my work in Toil and Bubble in Alston (station yard) and in the Moorland's Hotel, (Lancaster, I'm currently studying English at Uni of Cumbria in Lancaster.) I am able to do custom pieces, and people can email me with details
